Recession Proof Your Summer - Energy & Money Saving Tips
Summer is almost here, and with the current economic recession, you may be more worried than ever about saving money and energy. After all, as the temperatures go up, so do the costs of energy. As you work on going green this summer, you'll find that there are some great things you can do to not only save energy, but save some money too. Here are some top tips to cut back on what you spend this summer, even in the midst of tough times.
- Service the Air Conditioner - Before summer hits full force, it's a great idea to service the air conditioner in your home. The better the air conditioning unit runs, the more energy efficient it is going to be. If you haven't had the AC cleaned, it should be done yearly. Changing out the filter is important as well and you'll get a cooler home for less money and a unit that won't use as much energy to cool your home efficiently.
- Raise the Temp 2 Degrees - If you want to save energy and some money, simply raising the temp in the house by about 2 degrees can really help you to save. Instead of keeping the house at 76, set the thermostat to 78. You'll save about 5-10% on your cooling bill this summer if you do this. Raise it up to 80 degrees and you'll save even more.
- Consider an Energy Efficient AC Unit - Do you need a new air conditioning unit for your home? If so, make sure you put in one that is energy efficient. They'll help conserve energy and will save you money over time.
- Run or Install Ceiling Fans - If you have ceiling fans, run them. If you don't, then consider installing some. The fans help to circulate the cool air within the home. This makes you feel cooler and you can keep the thermostat turned up a bit while still feeling cool. You'll use less energy and save.
- Run Appliances in the Evening or Early Morning - If you have to run appliances, such as you washer, dryer, or dishwasher, do it in the evening or in the early morning. These are the coolest parts of the day. These machines all create more heat that can make the AC work harder, so run them when it is cooler to save on energy.
- Try to Avoid Using the Stovetop - If you can, it's a great idea to avoid using the stovetop to cook on, since it puts out quite a bit of heat. Use the microwave instead for cooking or get a grill and cook outside. This will keep the inside of your house cooler and your air conditioning won't have to work as hard.
- Check Your Windows and Doors - Check out your doors and windows. They may be costing you on your cooling bill. Windows that face the sun during the day should be shaded with heavy drapes or with double pane windows that are Energy Star rated. Tinting the windows can help as well. It's also a good idea to check around your doors to make sure there are no gaps that are letting all your cool air out and raising your cooling bill.
